What Is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy has long been used as a sports recovery tool to help athletes improve their performance, but the benefits of this innovative biohacking therapy go well beyond muscle recovery. By exposing your body to extreme cold for several minutes, whole-body cryotherapy treatments activate your natural metabolism so you can more effectively burn calories and fat. At Southwest Mind & Body Care, we are pleased to administer whole-body cryotherapy, localized cryotherapy, and cryofacials. Cryotherapy uses science and technology as a safe and efficient option for individuals who want to lose inches off their figure, trim body fat, or reduce cellulite on a number of different areas of the body. Our team can provide more information during a consultation at our practice in Dallas, TX.
What Is the Cryotherapy Process?
While most people are well-suited for this treatment, cryotherapy might not be safe for individuals with heart conditions, pacemakers, Raynaud's syndrome, or cold-induced asthma. A consultation will be performed at Southwest Mind & Body Care to see if you're a good candidate for cryotherapy based on your medical history.
Whole-Body Cryotherapy: To begin the whole-body cryotherapy treatment, you'll step into a cryogenic chamber where you'll be exposed to a very cold temperature for a short period of time, typically between 2 – 4 minutes. The cryochamber contains liquid nitrogen, which typically lowers the body temperature between around 30 – 50°F. The intense cold causes your metabolic rate to speed up as your body works to heat itself up again, potentially burning 500 – 800 calories per hour. Some patients may need multiple cryotherapy sessions to get their best results.
Localized Cryotherapy: Our team can freeze or destroy abnormal tissue, such as a wart, skin tag, or mole, by applying extreme cold with liquid nitrogen. A scab may form but will typically heal in a couple of weeks. After localized cryotherapy, we will advise you about the post-treatment instructions you’ll need to follow and whether additional treatments are required.
Cryofacials: This noninvasive treatment involves applying vaporized liquid nitrogen in short bursts on the face or neck. The cold temperature instantly tightens the skin and helps fill in fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure takes 20 – 30 minutes.
